Mayer Brown and Lawyer Talent Network host breakfast with Dallaglio RugbyWorks

Mayer Brown and Lawyer Talent Network hosted a breakfast today with Dallaglio RugbyWorks which is an educational charity we are really proud to be supporting   Maurice is on its development board. RugbyWorks works with children excluded from schools and outside mainstream education or in pupil referral units.

The charity provides a life skills program run by dedicated coaches, using touch rugby and sport as a hook to think differently, during those critical 3 key years (14-17) where meaningful intervention is proven to have long term benefits.  The aim is to get these children to think more broadly about their future, give them career taster days and ideally to get them on the right path to progress to college.  These are children forgotten by society with little help from family, society or government.  They have some terrific partners such as leading banks and after just 6 years are now in 83 schools across England and Wales and are ready to scale up the model.

Lawrence and Rachel Roxburgh, the Charity’s inspiring CEO gave an excellent outline of how the program works and explained that they are starting to see results including a couple of the students now at university.  The students get 4 employment taster opportunities over 2 years, which is access they would never otherwise have.  Lawrence started the breakfast with the inspiring story of South Africa World Cup winning Captain, Siya Kolisi, who defeated adversity and a very humble start to be the first black captain of South Africa and a world cup winner.  He also said SA thoroughly deserved to win and joked that after many years of planning the England team arrived half an hour late - we thought he meant in terms of performance on the pitch but apparently they got stuck in traffic!

The presentation has really highlighted to us the drastic need to support these vulnerable young people get back into education, employment or training. We think it would be a real eye-opener to see the programme in action and we are happy to put anyone in touch if you’re interested in you or your law firm getting involved in the charity or attending a session.

Huge thank you to Sally Davis and the Mayer Brown team for hosting and the law firm leaders and heads of diversity and inclusion who attended.
